CHLOE M. COOKE

My creative practices are rooted in experimentation and play. I often create work that allows me to understand and discover more about the world through connections. The intersections between beauty and truth unravel before us as we move through life. These moments are often shaped by our entanglements—with ourselves, each other, our communities, and the land around us. The nonhuman experiences can show us the depths of humanity. When we document these quiet moments and intentionally weave discovery into our reality, we gain the ability to dream of new paths for ourselves and others.

Collective Calendar

During my Illustration class, we were tasked with creating a collective calendar for the next year. This calendar would be RISO printed. After some discussion, we decided we wanted to illustrate mundane things that bring us joy. We all illustrated one month’s worth of joys. This is so we can all find new joys to be reminded of that might’ve not crossed our minds before.

For my month, January, I struggled to find joy. It's after the holiday season when we all go back to our individual reality in the dark wintertime. It felt mundane yes, but joyful? not exactly. After I went grocery shopping during this artist block, I remembered that one of my favorite foods last season was in January. Pomegranates! I illustrated pomegranates as a reminder to myself and my class to take advantage of the small joys the darkest months can offer you.
