Endangered Appalachia Rota Feather Moss
a collaborative book with Annie @sixeyedannie (Instagram)
This books form was a really fun process of iteration with Annie. We drew up these organic shapes in order to show the forms that moss often takes and grows in. We talked about lot about how moss can only exist within a community because of how entangled it is with mycelium networks. Each of the organic purple cut outs have lines to a poem. All of these lines can be interchangeable or stand alone. We wanted to give our viewer a way to write their own narrative when understanding endangered Appalachia and understand the importance of the smallest organism in this ecosystem. The green frame has notches throughout the knock outs so you can place the purple shapes in them anyway you choose. We wanted to create a book that allowed its viewers to build their own story/puzzle and interact with the story of endangered Appalachia.
Endangered Appalachia Virginia Big-Eared Bat
RISO Printed
This book form was based on a pop up book. It is an early study of what it is like to give the viewer the ability of creating their own narrative within a book. The book structure allows its viewer to build their own cave to showcase the bats. By giving viewers the ability to create their own unique visual narrative within a book, the book gains the ability of making deeper connections to viewers.
Endangered Appalachia Pygmy Salamander
RISO printed, 2”x3”
This book is sized to the Pygmy Salamander (the smallest Salamander in the world) and explores what books can give to their viewer. As the viewer reads through the book they are encouraged to take a Salamander home to remind them of the need to preserve this species.
Endangered Appalachia Carolina Northern Flying Squirrel
RISO Printed
This book form is a study on how our physical perspective when looking at a book changes its story. From one view of the book you get a tree line. From another you get a poem and a squirrel jumping into flight. When standing directly in front of the book you get the whole story.
Endangered Appalachia: Candy Darter Fish
RISO Printed
This book form shows the form of the fish and its specific colorings
Embracing Entanglement No. 2
This book series of ideation was created around the relationship between mold and comfort. Mold, fungus, and mushrooms cannot exist without mycelium. Mycelium are extremely thin strands that run underground to create systems of communication for these species. Mycelium connects the species and creates a community of organisms that work together to keep their communities thriving. Much like mold, people often find comfort in the community because people need people to survive. Mold needs mold to survive. These books feature scanned textiles that are soft and comforting along with images of mold. Two different poems run alongside each other to compare the experiences of mold and human comfort.
