Domesticated Women of the South (2023)
Growing up in the Southern US I held a lot of resentment towards my culture. I never planned on being the domesticated god-fearing woman I was expected to be. I rejected the feminine stereotypes that the American Dream condemned women to exist in. As I have gotten older I have questioned how we can rebel against these stereotypes without compromising our quality of life because, bottom line, dishes need to be cleaned, food needs to be cooked, and laundry needs to be washed. So what does it mean when we have to complete tasks that have been forced upon us in the past? This photography series is my investigation about the modern southern women's relationship to household tasks. These images were then printed onto fabric and sewn together through quilt making techniques that have been passed down through my family.
